A flower pot cracker — known in the trade as a fountain cracker — is a ground-based firework that produces an upward spray of bright sparks and coloured flames when lit. Unlike aerial shells that launch into the sky or sound crackers that produce a bang, flower pots stay firmly on the ground and spray their effects upward in a cone or fan shape.
The name comes from their resemblance to a flower in full bloom — the sparks spread outward and upward like petals from a vase. They are quiet, visually beautiful, and among the easiest crackers to use safely, making them ideal for beginners and families with young children.
Types of Flower Pot Crackers
Not all flower pots are alike. Here are the main varieties you will encounter:
- Single-colour fountains — Produce a consistent colour from start to finish. Gold and silver are the most common.

How to Light a Flower Pot Safely
Flower pot crackers are designed to be placed on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface — concrete, stone, or packed soil. Never place them on grass, paper, or wooden surfaces.

- Place the fountain upright on a flat surface away from overhanging materials.
- Make sure the fuse is dry and undamaged.
- Light the fuse using a long-handled lighter or lit agarbatti (incense stick).
- Move at least 3 metres away immediately after lighting.
- Watch the display from a safe distance.
Never pick up or move a fountain cracker after it has been lit. Never lean over or look directly into the top of the tube.
After the Burn
After a flower pot cracker has finished burning, the tube remains hot for several minutes. Do not touch it. Once it has cooled completely (allow at least 10 minutes), pour water over it before picking it up for disposal.
The ash and residue from fountain crackers is minimal compared to aerial crackers, making cleanup straightforward.
